Sense of belonging is a basic need, a fundamental human right, and defined as “a feeling that members (of a group) matter to each other and to the group,” which is largely affirmed, reflected, and signaled in (and through) a constellation of institutional policies, programs, and practices that conspire, converge, and cooperate to clearly communicate: You belong here, whether at home, church, school, or work. For instance, students’ sense of belonging takes on heightened importance in certain social contexts where some individuals are prone to feeling unsupported, unwelcomed, or lonely, or in some [spaces] where certain individuals are more likely to feel that way” (p. 5).
